"Profiling International Terrorists "

A Vincent Massey Collegiate World Issues 40S Webquest

Introduction The Task The Process Resources Evaluation Teachers

Introduction

The first stage in the terror campaign started on 9/11, 2001 when Washington and New York city were attacked with hi-jacked American airliners. Then came the Madrid and London bombings in 2004 and 2005 respectively. All three of these attacks on the 'Western World' have connections to Al - Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden.

Now the western world is once again bracing for another wave of terrorism. Through recent NATO intelligence collected by forces on patrol in Afghanistan, we know another attack is imminent. What we don't know, however, is when, where, and who will orchestrate the new terror campaign.

The Task

The United States and Canada are in grave peril because of this new security threat. The Canadian Minister of Defense is demanding a briefing on international terrorism. It is your team's job to analyze all aspects of a terrorist group and to provide a concise summation in the form of threat assessments. You and your group must help to determine where and when the next wave of terror might strike and who the guilty parties might be.

Each group will be responsible for researching the following information which will form the basis of your presentation.

bullet Description (when was it formed? profile the main leaders; purpose?)
bullet Activities (write detailed descriptions incorporating information related to both the terror tactics and some of the major attacks)
bullet Strength (use graphs if possible to highlight this area)
bullet Location/Area of Operation (include a map in your report)
bullet External Aid (What countries support/provide assistance to your group? Include a map)

The Process

1. The class will be divided into eleven groups with each group being given pre-selected terrorists group from the following list.

Abu Nidal Organization (ANO)
Aum Shinrikyo (AUM)
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE)
Hizballah (Party of God)
Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA)
HAMAS
National Liberation Army (ELN - Columbia)
Palestine Liberation Front (PLF)
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia (FARC)
Khmer Rouge
Shining Path (SL)
Chechnya-based Terrorists
Al-Qaeda

2. As outlined above, each group will have a variety of components to research and formulate into AN ORIGINAL classroom presentation and written profile.

3. Groups will be required to complete two components for this project:

a. A two-paged written component about your topic complete with a list of sources in bibliography format.
b. An original presentation (visuals are required.....video, pictures, slideshow, flash animations, etc.....)with a list of sources in bibliography format.

4. Groups members must take a team approach when developing the various components.

5. PLAGIARISM = Automatic Zero. This project is 15% of your term mark so remember to research, summarize, and write according to the guidelines provided in class.
